Heavy Jeens Artist Submission - What to Know!

Heavy Jeens is looking for artists to design upcoming posters!

Each month, we create a small run of Risograph-printed posters, hidden around Bremerton businesses for the community to find and keep. It’s accessable art, community building, and fun!

We’d love to see your work in the mix.

File Preparation for Risograph

How Risograph Printing Works

Risograph printing is a bit like screenprinting or traditional printmaking. Each color is printed one at a time, using its own ink drum and master sheet. When colors overlap, they create new tones and textures—similar to mixing paint.

That’s why your file must be set up in layers, with one layer for each color. This ensures we can separate and prepare your artwork for Riso production.

Setting Up Your Artwork

In Procreate:

  • Design your piece and separate each color onto its own layer.
  • Example: all shapes you want in blue go on one layer, all shapes in pink go on another.
  • Clearly label each layer by color (e.g., Blue Layer, Fluorescent Pink Layer).
  • Export your file as a PSD (Photoshop format) to preserve the layers.

In Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator:

  • Assign each color its own layer.
  • Use spot colors or CMYK approximations that match Riso inks, but don’t worry about perfection—what matters is keeping them separate.
  • Save your file as a PSD (Photoshop) or AI (Illustrator).

Naming Convention for Files:

HJ-LastName-FirstName-Date

(example: HJ-Smith-Alex-090125.psd)

Also include: a flattened JPEG preview of your design in full color so we know what you intend the final print to look like.
